When someone asks "do you have space in December?", answer in one message: yes or no, two specific dates and times you can offer, the price or what it includes, and one question that books the slot. Do not reply "Yes, which date?". That starts a slow back-and-forth while they wait for answers from other businesses.
You know this message. It lands at 21:40, between your last client and supper. "Hi, do you have space in December?"
You reply the next morning: "Hi! Yes, which date?" They answer that evening. You send the price the day after. Then two blue ticks, and nothing. In mid-December you see her in someone else's chair on Instagram.
Nobody said no. The slot went to whoever answered clearly first.
Why are December inquiries coming in already?
Because people plan December now, in October and November, not in December. The clearest numbers come from travel, where people book early because prices rise.
IOL reported on 20 October 2026 that Standard Bank's data shows almost a third of annual spending on domestic airlines is booked between September and November. The same report says the average December flight is booked more than six weeks in advance.
That is travel, not lashes or wedding photos. But it tells you when South Africans make their December plans: right now. Your clients are planning the matric dance look, the year-end function, the family shoot and the wedding in the same weeks they are booking flights.
Retail has noticed too. MyBroadband reported on 18 October 2026 that Amazon.co.za is running an early Black Friday sale from 21 October 2026. Black Friday itself falls on 27 November. The season of "how much?" and "do you have space?" has started.
And people are careful with money while they plan. The same IOL report says middle- and lower-income households made up to 45% more hotel bookings in December 2025 while spending 6% less per booking. They still book. They just compare first. If you are one of three businesses they messaged, the clear answer has the edge.
What should I reply when someone asks if I have space in December?
Answer the real question in one message. They want to know three things: can you do it, when, and roughly what it costs. Give all three, then ask one question that turns the answer into a booking.
Here is the shape. The names, dates and prices are made up, to show how it works.
| Instead of this | Send this |
|---|---|
| "Hi! Yes, which date?" | "Hi Palesa! Yes, I have 12 December at 10am or 14 December at 2pm open. A full set is R450 and takes about 90 minutes. Which one shall I put your name on?" |
| "December is very busy, let me check." | "December is filling up. I can still do a shoot on 5 or 19 December. The family package is R1,800 for an hour. Would a morning or afternoon suit your family better?" |
| "Please send me the date and number of guests." | "Yes, we cater year-end functions. Most teams pick our R180 a head lunch menu. What date are you looking at, and roughly how many people?" |
Each reply on the right gives a real answer and ends with a question that takes two seconds to answer. "The 12th." "Morning." "The 4th, about 30 of us." Every one of those answers moves the chat toward a booking.
In December, the slot does not go to the first reply. It goes to the first clear answer.
Why does "Yes, which date?" lose the booking?
Because it hands the work back to the client. Now they must reply, wait for your next message, and wait again for the price. Each round can take hours when you answer between clients.
Meanwhile they messaged two other businesses with the same question. The one that sent dates and a price in the first reply gave them everything they needed to decide. You gave them a question.
Two specific options also make it easier to say yes. "When suits you?" makes them think. "The 12th or the 14th?" only asks them to pick.
How do I hold a December slot without being messed around?
Hold it for a short, stated time, and ask for a deposit to confirm. Say it plainly in the same chat, so nobody is surprised later.
For example: "I can hold 12 December at 10am for you until tomorrow at 6pm. A R150 deposit confirms it, and it comes off the final price. Shall I send the details?"
That message protects your diary and gives the client a clear next step. It also tells you who is serious. Someone who pays a deposit in October is far more likely to arrive in December than someone who said "I'll let you know".
How do I set this up before the rush?
Do it once, now, in about 15 minutes. Then every December inquiry gets a clear answer in two taps.
- Write down your open December slots. Keep the list in a note on your phone and update it as slots fill.
- Save your December reply as a quick reply in WhatsApp Business, with a shortcut such as /december. Leave gaps for the name and the two dates.
- Save your deposit message as a second quick reply, with the hold time and how to pay.
- Add a "December" label to every chat that asks about December, so none of them get lost in the pile.
Once a day, open the December label. Anyone who got your reply and went quiet gets one short follow-up.
How do I know if my first reply is working?
Count it. Judge the change on three numbers from your own inbox, not on how busy you feel.
| Number | How to count it |
|---|---|
| Reply time | How long before your first answer, on average |
| Quiet chats reopened | December chats that went silent and came back after a follow-up |
| Close rate | December bookings divided by December inquiries |
Start with this week's inquiries. Send the new reply to every December question. At the end of the week, count how many asked and how many booked. That number is yours, and it will tell you more than any article.
Questions owners ask
Should I put my price in the first reply?
Yes, if your service has a set price. Give the price with what it includes and a next step, like a date to pick. If the price depends on the job, give a starting price and ask the one question you need to quote properly.
What if I am fully booked for December?
Say so in the first reply, then offer the next best thing: a January date or a waiting list for cancellations. For example: "December is full, but I have 8 January open. Shall I hold it, or add you to my cancellation list?"
Should I ask for a deposit on a December booking?
For busy dates, a small deposit that comes off the final price protects your diary. State the amount, what it is for and how long you will hold the slot, in the same message.
How fast should I reply to December inquiries?
As fast as you can give a complete answer. A clear reply an hour later beats a vague "yes!" in a minute that needs three more messages. Quick replies in WhatsApp Business let you do both.
